Janskerk, Trajectum Lumen Utrecht

The city of Utrecht iniciated the project Trajectum Lumen, a permanent light tour through the city centre with the objective to attract visitors. The Janskerk is a prominent church in the city centre and is part of the light tour. The lighting design tells two stories, one about the history of the building and one about the ‘magic of light’. The building was created in different time periods, roman and gothic, to enhance the difference in styles, the roman is lit as if by moonlight: a cool white cast of light on the building and warm light from within. The gothic is lit in a dramatic way with graze lighting, emphasizing the verticality of the building. The story of ‘the magic of light’ consists of a dynamic lighting sceme. The visitor is guided by twinkeling lights and the sound of bells in the trees to the apse where a light scene takes place. The high gothic windows appear as projection screens where one sees the twinkling of white light, as if it were light reflecting on water, afterwards breaking in to the colours of which light consists. These colours fill the apse as if it were a pumping heart of colours. Suddenly the light exits the building and the visitors are washed in colour and are invited to play with their coloured shadows and be amazed by the ‘magic of light’. From the point of view of sustainability, choises have been made carefully, looking for the best solution for each item, LED for dynamic lighting and HID where high light levels are required, and choosing to show the scheme only from sunset untill 24.00.

Het lichtontwerp van de Janskerk is een onderdeel van Trajectum Lumen, een permanente lichtroute langs bijzondere plekken in Utrecht. De bezoeker die de route loopt, krijgt de historie van de kerk als eerste beeld te zien. De kerk bestaat uit drie bouwstijlen die ieder op hun eigen manier worden uitgelicht, waardoor de rijke historie van de kerk zichtbaar wordt. Romaans: sober, gotisch: dramatisch, 17de eeuws: warm, zacht. De route wordt vervolgd langs een pad van bomen met twinkelend licht en geluid om de bezoeker te leiden naar een stil plekje bij het koor. Hier vindt achter de ramen een schouwspel plaats van reflecties en kleur die verwondering oproept, om uiteindelijk over te gaan in een compositie van verschillende lichtkleuren aan de buitenkant van het gebouw die de bezoeker uitnodigen om te spelen met licht.
