Installation Biennale Venice

Bekkering Adams Architects (BAA) were selected and invited to participate in the Architecture Biennale of Venice curated by Rem Koolhaas in 2014 with the installation ‘Form – Contra Form’ at the Palazzo Mora as part of the exhibition ‘Time, Space, Existence’ within the overall theme ‘Fundamentals’. As part of the multidisciplinary team Beersnielsen developed the lighting for this installation. The installation consists of 14.000 white little spheres stitched on 600 threads, forming a cube of 2,4 x 2,4 meter within the exhibition room. Within this form a ‘contra form’ is cut out, enabling visitors to entre. Through changing light projections different plains in the mass are being highlighted. Immersed by a changing cloud of bullets, visitors experience both the boundaries as well as the perception of the endlessness of space.

Unlike what one might expect the little spheres do not give light themselves, instead they are illuminated by spots. We installed 9 iGuzzini Trick-Blade180° fixtures, each individually controlled via DMX. The narrow planes of light enable to slice the cube in different directions and (re)define its form. In addition we installed a center spot with IR motion detection, a black light canon and spots that illuminate the cube via a dichroic mirror on the floor. These different programed light scenes follow each other smoothly in a loop of 1 minute. By illuminating the cube on different ways we can manipulate and alter the experience of the cube and elaborate on the theme form, contra form and the endlessness of space.
