For the shopping area Breestraat and surroundings in Beverwijk, Beersnielsen designed a twofolded lighting plan, consisting of public and atmospheric lighting.

The public lighting design connects to the new street profile and generates enough visibility. The road is illuminated by luminaires attached to 7 metres high pylons, which seamlessy integrate with the connecting station area. By contrast, in the pedestrian area the old facades are illuminated by luminaires with a more historic character. These light sources are connected to 4 metres high lampposts and hanging light fittings. The smaller scale and straightforward form of the luminaires create a more ‘intimate’ atmosphere for the pedestrians.

Apart from functional lighting there are also several layers of ambient lighting, which support the routing, orientation and identity of the street. For example highlighting the vegetation and seating areas in the Breestraat and ofcourse the historic and characteristic facades along the street.

Contiguous to these ambient lighting elements, there is an additional narrative layer of lighting projections. Projections with the theme horse racing are shown on blind walls in the Breestraat and connecting streets. These projections emphasize not only the junctions, but also the identity of the street. At the square in the middle of the Breestraat projections on the street – made by Lenneke van der Goot – create a vibrant appearance. It is also possible to change the design of the projections, for example at the holidays. Hereby the people of Beverwijk can get the opportunity to make a design themselves, creating a possibility to increase the connection between citizens and the municipality.
