Headquarters situated in a green environment are a designers dream. Paul de Ruiter architects asked us to make a lighting design for the interior and exterior of this transparent building.
The building consist of a ground floor with three office wings and a central atrium with a big tree in the middle. Green walls with houseplants pull the green environment inside the building. Above the open green atrium a round top floor gives room to meeting rooms and a transparent roof in the middle for natural light in the atrium.
The lighting design for this transparent, energy efficient and high quality building focused on daylight and on highlighting some key elements, such as the green walls, the big tree in the atrium and the bench around this tree.
Since some of the green walls are shaped around the round atrium, the light tracks for the fixtures needed to be round as well. Finding a solution for these round light tracks, suitable for the right fixtures for the green walls was a challenge.
The tree in the atrium asked for a special lighting solution. Instead of lighting the tree, we choose to play with its shadows. By doing so, we created a natural feeling like in a forest. Of course this key object in the office building also deserved some direct attention, that’s why we integrated light in the surrounding bench.
The round top floor is also transparent en closely connected to the atrium. To emphasize the architecture we added light in between the ground floor ceiling and the drum.
The lighting plan for the access path and parking places has been designed with the emphasis of the green park-like environment as the hero. The number of fixtures and the lux-levels have been limited, so people are not blinded and can see the surroundings, even in the dark.
We also had to keep in mind that this area is a route for bats, which suffer from too much light. Therefore a timer has been installed, so the bats won’t be troubled by light.
