In 2013 we started working with Kröller Müller at the new light experience in the Quist-zaal and the temporary exhibition spaces. Seurat was the first exhibition with new light. Choosing the best LED fixtures for these spaces was a long, precise and interesting process.

After doing the temporary spaces we were asked to do the Van de Velde Vleugel (1920). Challenging question from the client; Reducing the Lux level on the Van Gogh’s to enhance the experience. The aim was to show more of the beautiful details of the (dark) paintings. The Van Gogh gallery has diffused light, provided trough the roof caps, which brings 150 Lux everywhere, on the Van Gogh’s and on the grey walls.

Together with Kröller Müller we started testing in 2015, showing that is was desirable to reduce diffused light. The solution was adding small spots for direct light to make the paintings more alive. The mock-ups fixtures stayed there for a longer period, until 2019. In 2019 we chose the Proliad fixture and Xicato Artist 4000 K

After a lot of testing on side with different fixtures the end result is diffused light from the roof caps creating 75 Lux. Additional to this diffused light direct 25 Lux fixtures are aimed directly on the paintings. So with as much Lux as before, the paintings are more high lighted.
