St. Plechelmus square is the heart of Oldenzaal, an age-old fortified city whose medieval street pattern is still visible in the city center today. The main square is dominated by the cathedral that dates back to the twelfth century with colorful stained glass windows dating from the nineteenth century. Focusing attention on the cathedral and the medieval street pattern is the leitmotif and source of inspiration for the redesign of St. Plechelmus square lead by landscape architects B+B. Lighting design was incorporated in an early stage of the process. Being part of the multidisciplinary design team we were able to deliver a clear, efficient, carefully detailed and inspiring lighting concept for this urban public space.
The open square is illuminated by a minimal number of lighting masts to keep the space clean and open. Car traffic limited and the historic ring of trees along the edge of the square has been restored to reinforce the shape of the space. The open space is also defined by the façades surrounding the square. A new low wall that follows the direction of the old façades accentuates this and integrates a series of lighting features to illuminate the trees, steps and sitting areas.
Central to the square is the tower of the cathedral that is accentuated by illuminating the warm colors of the historic facades by a crisp clear light. Part of the lighting concept involves the interior of the cathedral. By illuminating the colorful stained glass windows from inside, they reveal their stories and beauty to the public at night. Another special element is the statue of St. Plechelmus. We proposed to illuminate the statue and use its magnifying shadow as a silhouette on the cathedral to enhance his presence and visibility. The magnified St. Plechelmus can be seen from far away.
Het St. Plechelmusplein is het hart van Oldenzaal. Op het centrale plein staat de Plechelmusbasiliek die zijn oorsprong heeft in de twaalfde eeuw met karakteristieke kleurrijke glas-in-lood-ramen uit de negentiende eeuw. De basiliek en het omringende middeleeuwse stratenpatroon vormen de rode draad en inspiratie voor landschapsarchitectbureau B+B in het ontwerp voor de herinrichting van de St. Plechelmusplein
Aandacht voor licht is vanaf een vroeg stadium geïntegreerd in het ontwerpproces. Hierdoor waren wij in staat om als multidisciplinair team een heldere, efficiënte, zorgvuldig gedetailleerde en inspirerende publieke ruimte te realiseren die niet alleen overdag maar ook ‘s avonds goed functioneert en aantrekkelijk is. Het plein is zo open en overzichtelijk mogelijk gehouden. De auto is slechts te gast en de ruimte wordt verlicht door een minimaal aantal lichtmasten. Om de vorm van de ruimte te versterken is de historische rand van de bomen langs het plein in ere hersteld. De open ruimte wordt tevens bepaald door de gevels rondom het plein. Dit wordt geaccentueerd door een nieuwe lage muur die richting van de oude gevels volgt. De muur vangt tevens het hoogteverschil van het plein op en integreert de verlichtingsarmaturen die de bomen, traptreden en verschillende plekken langs het plein aanlichten.
Centraal op het plein staat de toren van de basiliek. Deze hebben we geaccentueerd door van de warme kleuren van de historische gevels aan te lichten. Het interieur van de basiliek is tevens een onderdeel van het verlichtingsconcept. Door het verlichten van de kleurrijke glas-in-lood-ramen vanuit het interieur, onthullen ze ’s avonds hun schoonheid en afbeeldingen aan het publiek op het plein. Een ander bijzonder element in het lichtplan is het bewust inzetten van schaduw. Zo hebben we voorgesteld om het standbeeld van St. Plechelmus zo aan te lichten dat zijn schaduw een groot silhouet vormt op de basiliek. Hierdoor is St. Plechelmus sterker aanwezig op het plein en herkenbaar vanaf een grote afstand. Tijdens evenementen kan de toren gebruik worden als projectievlak van bijvoorbeeld de de ramen die in de huidige situatie slechts als reliëf zichtbaar zijn.
